After departing the hotel, drive along Marginal Bay, with the commercial part of the city on the one side, and views across the bay on the other.

Stop at the San Miguel Fort, today the National Museum of Military History, originally built-in 1576. Its purpose was to defend the port and the city from attack by the marauding French, Spanish and Dutch armies. It was successful until 1641 when the Dutch seized Luanda.

Between 2009 and 2013, rehabilitation works were carried out on the fortress. An underground space of 1200 m² was built, where an auditorium, a gallery, and the pantheon of the heroes are installed. In the central pillbox, the tile panels were restored. The old warehouses housed a laboratory, an audiovisual room, and a cafeteria, as well as the administrative area of the museum. In the gunpowder house, study rooms and a library were installed. Outside, an exhibition park was built with the monument flag.

Driving to the new marginal side, we will stop to see from the distance the most unique sight – the Agostinho Neto Mausoleum, a huge stylized obelisk.

After the death of Agostinho Neto, which occurred on September 10, 1979, in the former Union of Soviet Socialist Republics, the Angolan Government commissioned the former USSR, the project for the construction of a Mausoleum to house the remains of the President.

The laying of the first stone took place on September 17, 1982, by the then President of the Republic José Eduardo dos Santos. In 1998, the project was reformulated, and the works were returned in January 2005, having been completed in January 2011.

On September 17 of the following year, José Eduardo dos Santos inaugurates the Memorial Dr. António Agostinho Neto. With an area of 18 hectares, it has a central block that holds the sarcophagus, where the remains of Agostinho Neto rest, a museum, exhibition gallery, multipurpose rooms, administration, library/video library, multimedia library, documentation center, shops, and hall of the authorities, adjacent to the outer presidential grandstand.

Thereafter drive to “Cidade Alta”, or uptown, a pleasant, airy, and calm suburb above the rest of the city, with several pink colonial buildings. Here you’ll have the opportunity to see the Presidential Palace, together with the Prime Minister’s office and the Ministries of Defense, Immigration, and Justice. Here we have the pleasure of visiting (if possible) the beautiful Catholic Church “Igreja de Jesus”, where many important people of Angolan high society get married.

Depart “Cidade Alta” and drive to Ilha de Luanda which is a beautiful area, where you may enjoy a delicious seafood barbeque at a restaurant on the beach. You will also have the opportunity to go for a swim in the Atlantic Ocean.

After a sun-soaked day, return to the hotel along the Marginal and drive past the Angola National Bank – a great example of colonial architecture.
