Quiçama National Park is an Angolan natural park, situated 100 km away from Luanda, the closest one to Luanda that is reachable by tourists. Quiçama has an area of almost 10.000 km². The vegetation is varied from Kwanza riverbanks into the park: dense woods, savanna, cacti, baobab trees, etc. Its diversified vegetation allows a rich and varied fauna. There are giraffes, elephants, African manatees, red sable, among others, and a diversity of birds.
The nature park was founded in 1957. It was damaged during the civil war years. Most animal species in this region were almost eradicated or greatly minimized. In 2001, elephants from Botswana and South Africa were successfully resettled and have been steadily increasing their numbers ever since.
As a result, the animal population is recovering slowly. Please note that Kissama National Park is not a private animal reserve, as is often seen in Tanzania or South Africa. The animals live there free and go their own way. Therefore, sightings of individual species cannot be guaranteed.
Earlier departure from Luanda. On the way, we will stop at a local resort to take breakfast and take a boat trip to Kwanza river. After an earlier lunch, we will drive to Quiçama park for a game drive that will take around 2 hours.
On the way back to Luanda stop at Miradoura de Lua, or Viewpoint of the Moon which offers such stunning views that it has long been one of Angola’s most visited tourist attractions. The Miradouro da Lua has been uniquely eroded and shaped by the wind and rain over the course of thousands of years. Though it is a sight to behold at any time of the day, this extraterrestrial landscape is best viewed at sunset.
After this, we will start on your return journey to Luanda.
