Day 1: Kissama National Park

Departure from Luanda heading South Luanda to Kissama National Park for a safari.

Kissama National Park is an Angolan natural park, situated 75 km from Luanda, the closest one to Luanda that is reachable by tourists.

The vegetation is varied from Kwanza riverbanks into the park: mangroves, dense woods, savanna, cacti, baobab trees, etc. Its diversified vegetation allows a rich and varied fauna. There are African manatees, red sable, talapoins, and sea turtles, for instance. If you are lucky you can also see giraffes and elephants as well.

Departure to Cabo Ledo to have lunch and enjoy the afternoon on this beautiful beach. Depending on the time of the year you will be able to see turtles’ nests. This beach is also known to be one of the places where the turtles come every year to put their eggs.

Day 2: Boat Trip Kwanza River

After breakfast, depart to the Kwanza River to have a boat trip to this famous and biggest river of Angola. Opportunity to enjoy a fresh fish meal.

Departure heading to Luanda. On the way, stop at Moon Viewpoint (Miradouro da Lua). The Moon Viewpoint is a set of cliffs 40 km south of Luanda, in the municipality of Samba in Angola. Breathtaking and unique!

Over time, erosion caused by wind and rain created the kind of lunar-martian landscape that we find today. Enjoy a stop during the latter part of the day at the "Grand Canyon" of Angola.

KNOW MORE ABOUT KISSAMA NATIONAL PARK BEFORE VISITING:

Kissama is also known as Quicama National Park. Locally, it is also referred to as parquet Nacional do Quicama or Parque Nacional da Quissama.

The park is situated between the Atlantic Coast to the east, the Cuznza River to the north, and the Longa River to the south. The majority of the park is comprised of savannah grasslands, dense vegetation, and Baobab forests.

Kissama is the only park that is currently operating as a national park. This is mostly from the collaborative effort from Botswana and South Africa known as Noah’s Ark. This project served as the world’s largest animal transplant creating an opportunity for the park to return closer to its original status.

One of the main highlights of the park is to experience the revitalization of a national park that was close to extinction. Seeing wildlife as a natural wonder that was influenced by the service of mankind that helped the animals find new homes and rebuilding the national park is a testimony of a community that cares.

Kissama National Park is not known as a hiker’s haven, but there are ways to get out and about on foot to explore the natural environment.
